10 Amazing Benefits of Bike Riding

If you’re in the middle of a quest for the perfect form of exercise, you should definitely take bike riding into consideration. It doesn’t really matter if you’re just starting, recovering from some kind of injury, or just looking for an addition to your regular training – a bike ride every now and then will do the trick, and it’s fun.

It’s a common misbelief that legs are the only thing involved when cycling – your whole body is engaged, including your mind. There are so many different benefits that come from riding a bike, and that’s the reason why cyclists are so enthusiastic about their hobby – it often becomes their lifestyle. So, let’s find out what happens to our body and mind during every ride.

Here are the 10 Benefits of Bike Riding:

#1 – Cardiovascular Health

This is one of the most important benefits of bike riding for me. Considering the fact that cycling makes a rider’s heart pound in a steady manner, the whole cardiovascular system benefits from it. Adopting this healthy habit will directly decrease the risk of heart disease.

#2 – Burning Up Calories

If you have any extra pounds you’d like to lose, bike riding is a great way to get rid of them once and for all. When compared to ordinary fitness routines, cycling puts a lot less pressure on your knees and joints in general, so you’ll be burning calories without feeling discomfort or damaging your body.

#3 – Muscle Tone Development

Bike riding is also a good way to add some muscle. It’s not as efficient as weightlifting in this regard, but focusing on speed, particularly if you are trying to ride as fast as you can uphill, you will definitely develop shapely legs and glutes.

#4 – Builds Up Stamina

Endurance is a highly appreciated trait, which you’ll be able to further develop through cycling. With each ride, you’ll go the extra mile – literally, which will help make you incredibly fit in no time. No more gasping for air after running up a flight of stairs.

#5 – Legit Method of Transportation

It’s green, it’s fast and it’s healthy for you. More and more people are choosing bike riding as their primary means of transportation – as a matter of fact, cyclists never had it better, because cities worldwide are promptly adjusting their streets to be cycling-friendly. If you are riding a bike instead of driving, you are reducing pollution. This mean you are doing a good deed to our environment. As we all know, the exhaust emissions from motor vehicles are damaging our environment and our health every day. But by cycling, we won’t increase pollutions.

#6 – Relieve Stress

Built-up stress is the cause of many health problems, some of which we’re not even aware of. Among the health benefits that come from regularly riding a bicycle, there’s one more that needs to be emphasized – it’s a great way to deal with stress.

Imagine the fresh air bounding to your face that makes you feel refreshing and energetic when you’re riding a bike. All the negative things or the things you stressed about are temporary gone. It’s just a good way to reset your mind, and decrease your anxiety. You can sleep better at night!

#7 – Encourages Discipline

Having a bicycle is a responsibility – if you do want to enjoy your rides without any discomfort, you need to take better care of your bike. For example, if you don’t take a proper care of your tires, e.g. ensure that the tire pressure is just right, the quality level of your rides will decrease. Installing a system like the FOBO Bike, which monitors pressure and informs you of any changes via Bluetooth, and doing a number of small maintenance tasks will enable you to develop discipline. Taking care of your bike is also a great way to relax and learn to focus.

#8 – A Healthy Hobby

Once you get used to bike riding, you’ll stop seeing it as a form of exercise, and it will become a hobby you’ll look forward to. Even after a really bad day, just one ride will help you filter all that tension right out of you, and you’ll be able to spend the rest of your day relaxed and positive.

#9 – It’s Cheap & Practical

Another great thing is that you can ride your bike practically anywhere, anytime, unless of course it’s snowing or raining pretty bad. All you really need is a good bike, some basic equipment like the FOBO Bike (to monitor your tire pressure), a regular workout outfit and a nice pair of sneakers. Unless you want to go pro, this won’t cost you a fortune.

#10 – Reconnect with Nature

It’s a pity that most of us don’t spend nearly enough time in nature. Just ask yourself – when was the last time you went on a picnic or decided to go camping? Bike riding will enable you to spend more time in parks and cycling pathways outside major cities. Who knows, maybe you became so fond of it that you even join a club and go on a cross-country ride.

There’s one last thing I’d like to mention – you’ll find your inner peace thanks to cycling. This is a dynamic way to spend some quality time alone with your thoughts while your body is engaged – it’s an amazing combination, really.

Because of all these reasons, you’ll be able to discover by yourself, and I sincerely recommend bike riding as a unique form of exercising that you can greatly benefit from. However, you can’t be sure of that until you try – so, what are you waiting for?

  • I’ve been trying to come up with something that I can use to lose some weight and get some exercise. I didn’t realize that bike riding was such a good source for both of those! My favorite part is how it’s also a legitimate method of transportation. I’ll have to give it a shot! Thanks for sharing.

    • Hi Braden, thanks for stopping by my website. 🙂
Yes, there are a lot of benefits in bike riding. As I am already 42 years old, vigorous sports do not suit me anymore.
I had high-blood pressure and high cholesterol problems a few years ago due to overweight. So I cut down my weight a lot through dieting and mild exercise. Swimming and biking are the exercises that my family and I love nowadays. We all have fun through biking. Seriously! I encourage you to do that. It will help 🙂
