How to Get Your Bike Ready for Some Spring Driving
I know you might think that there is a lot more time before spring really gets here, but it isn’t that far off. This is the right time to dig out your bike from that garage or basement you have been keeping it in and get it ready for the first warm and pleasant ride of the year. Before you start, it is important to thoroughly inspect your bike and see if there is anything that needs to be fixed. If your bike needs to be taken to a repair shop, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to give it a good scrubbing first. We have prepared a list of things you need to check and do before you take out your bike for your first spring ride.
Cleaning Your Bike
If your bike is clean, it will ride faster, last way longer and look much better. Take as much time as you need to clean your bike, and see if any parts are damaged or worn. Look for cracks, dents and pay attention to any parts that might need to be replaced. The best way to properly clean your bike is to use a damp cloth. First, remove the dust and grime that are on the frame, brakes, and rims and then clean everything else. You can even clean the chain with an old toothbrush, with soapy water, so that you can oil it up with a fresh coat of oil.
Check The Bike Brakes
Every brake has an indicator on its brake pads that shows you when they’re not safe for further use. This is very important for your safety. If your brakes are near that indicator, it is time to change them. The next thing to check is how the breaks are reacting when you squeeze the brake lever; they should hit the rim simultaneously. Clean the brakes and make sure to test them out before you go on your first big ride.
Check Bike Tires
Tires are maybe the most important thing on your bike and they need to be in perfect condition. First, you need to inspect them by deflating them to about half their pressure. Then, start rotating the wheel and feel each tire with your hands to see if there are any threads or cuts. If you see that the tire is damaged, you need to replace it, but if they look fine, just inflate them to a recommended pressure. If you want to make sure that your tires are always in top condition, you should install FOBO Bike. FOBO Bike works wirelessly with your smartphone, monitors your tire temperature and pressure, and lets you know if something changes.
Check Bike Cables
Cables on bikes are made of coiled metal wires and surrounded by a plastic housing. They connect the brakes and shifters, which are on the handlebars, to the brake pads and derailleur. The smart thing to do is to check the cables for any cracks, rust, looseness and dirt and, if you notice any of this, you should change the cables. New cables on your bike will make your braking and shifting smooth and increase overall performance. Based on how much you use your bike, you should replace your cables every 2 to 5 years, but if you are an active cyclist, you should replace your cables every year.
After you have done all of the things on this list, you are ready to take out your bike for its first spring ride. Make sure that you are properly equipped, i.e. wear a helmet and comfortable bike shorts, because your body will need to get used to the saddle. If you are planning to take a longer ride, always bring something to eat and drink. I believe that this goes without saying, but always follow the rules of the road. With all this knowledge and the right equipment, you can enjoy the exercise and just have a little fun.
